One of the most common sensations in pregnant women who are breastfeeding is thirst, especially at the time when the baby is being breastfed. So much so that many moms breastfeed their children with a glass of water nearby.

Why is this happening? It is a response of the human body to maintain a good level of hydration during breastfeeding.

Lactating babies do not need to drink water since mother's milk contains almost 90% of this liquid. This implies that to maintain the daily production of breast milk, the mother has to drink enough liquid, preferably water. If the nursing mother is mildly dehydrated, breastfeeding may not be compromised, but it is if she is severely or moderately dehydrated.

Therefore, in addition to continuing to maintain a healthy and complete diet, it is convenient to stay well hydrated.

Nursing mothers should drink at least 2 liters of fluids daily or even more. It is recommended to drink mainly water, although adequate hydration needs can also be met with juices, broths or infusions. It is also advisable to include foods rich in liquid in the diet, especially fruits and vegetables.

If breastfeeding is taking place in the hot season or in an extremely hot area, it is advisable to increase your fluid intake to 3 liters to make up for those lost by sweating.

To cover the basic needs for liquids, it is advisable to carry out a routine throughout the breastfeeding period: drink fruit juice at breakfast, always eat with water and have fresh fruit for dessert, for a snack also take fruit or juice and during feedings have a glass of water to the side to quench thirst.
