With the presence of heat, not only the temperature increases, but the chances of being 'attacked' by different insects, especially mosquitoes, ticks, bed bugs, horseflies or even lice.

Parents have a logical concern about the safety of insect repellants when infants and young children are at home.

In the market there are many types of insect repellants with the label of 'natural' or 'bio' and it can be misleading, not everything natural can be used in very young children, because its absorption can produce adverse effects in babies.

Natural repellants, as can be citronella or eucalyptus essenceThey work well as repellants although they are not as powerful as synthetics; We must also apply them more continuously, and several times to avoid bites during exposure times.

Synthetic repellants are not as bad as they are painted ... It is true that they contain chemicals, but in the studies they have been subjected to, they are classified as safe, since their absorption is minimal. They have been shown to be more effective compared to natural ones, and fewer applications are required to obtain good protection (point to be assessed for forgetful parents).

- Less than 2 months: It is contraindicated to use any type of repellent, be it natural or chemical. We can use essential oils, such as the derivative of citronella to scare away the bugs.

- Infants and children under 2 years: In children under two years of age, the use of synthetic repellants containing DEET (Relec, Autan) is usually discouraged in Spain, where mosquito bites do not transmit any serious disease; although if we travel with children to endemic areas, we could value its use. For these ages there is a variety of safe chemical repellent, which has shown greater efficacy than natural repellants, which is the one based on IR3535 (Relec Infantil, for example).

- From 2 years: In addition to being able to use the above, the WHO recommends the use of repellents based on DEET at concentrations of 20%.

- During pregnancy and lactation: In principle they are not contraindicated in this period, however their use in the first trimester is not recommended. However, if you are not going to travel to risk areas during this period, you can use a citronella-based repellent.
