It is very normal that a child, when he has a cold or an allergy that causes a nasal obstruction, does not sleep well and many times start snoring at night. What is not normal is when this snoring persists for a longer time, altering your sleep and your behavior during the day. That's what a new study, published in the journal Pediatrics, reveals.
Preschoolers who snore regularly may have an increased risk of developing behavior problems than other children his age. The authors of the research carried out by the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center monitored 249 children from birth to 3 years of age, among whom 9 percent were considered persistent snorers, according to the reports submitted by parents.
We all know that bad sleep is not favorable for our daily performance. It is the same with children. If they don't sleep well the next day they suffer from excessive sleepiness, they are tired and often impatient, more sensitive to difficulties and vulnerable to frustrations. This study also reveals that 2 and 3-year-olds who snored loudly at least a couple of times a week tended to have more problems with inattention and hyperactivity than others. Apart from that, the study also concludes that loud snoring occurs in about 1 in 10 children.
The experts, responsible for the research, advise parents that when children's snoring becomes chronic and loud, they should raise the problem with the child's pediatrician. Snoring caused by a simple cold for a few days is not the same than one that lasts more than a week, for example. Children who snore or breathe through their mouths when they are asleep, in a chronic way, are more exposed to behavior problems, and even depression.
